I am very sad to report that my sweet Sydney grew his angel wings and flew to heaven last Friday the 20th. He had cancer. Diagnosed on Thursday and died on Friday.

    • I’m so sorry Shannon. I know how you feel. I lost my Lucy in February of this year to cancer too. I sometimes wonder if these eye problems are linked somehow. My dog had glaucoma and we thought everything was okay after the eye removal and then she got cancer – a nasal tumour. It was just all too much for her and for us.

In some ways I was…[Read more]

I would alternate cold and hot packs once an hour for the swelling – for as ling as he can tolerate it. Also I would call the vet – there could be a minor infection – or just a build up if fluid from a leaky drainage issue – if it didn’t heal correctly from the surgery. If Billy doesn’t seem to be in pain and it comes and goes – it’s probably…[Read more]

    BLIND DOG POEM…..
I cannot see you Mommy, when you cuddle me so near.
And yet I know you love me, it’s in the words I hear.
I cannot see you Daddy, when you hold me by your side
But still I know you love me when you tell me so with pride.
I cannot see to run and play out in the sun so bright
For here inside my tiny head it’s always dark…[Read more]

Also helpful with that as the best way to prepare him with the lavendar is to associate the smell it with something soothing like a calm room, food, petting him etc. So when he smells the lavendar wherever he is — that is what he associates it with.

Carol – I submitted two replies to you – I dont know if you got them??? There are a lot of members – have you \’friended\’ them? Other wise they dont see your post – or they comment to you and you dont get it. Paula maintains the site – maybe she knows?

Your vet may also be able to give him a doggy valium or phenobarbitol.

Michelle – I know exactly what you mean! My 12 year old Sydney boy had it too. It took a year or two to become completley blind.I cried all the time. Then had to accept that I was not doing him any good feeling sorry for him and the inevitable. Dogs pick up on us crying and us feeling sorry and bad ( as a weakness). So I took the high road and b…[Read more]

Michelle — Keep your routine! Go to work – do alllll the things you do now. It sounds cold- but it’s important to not ”baby”him by feeding a weakness like when he bumps into stuff – or misses some stairs. It’s just like babies and toddlers. If we make a big deal over little falls and bumps- they learn to be fearful or scared as we feed the (s…[Read more]

My vet suggested during fireworks season to give scared dogs half a benadryl. My neighbors have done it with their Westies and they were fine. There is also a holistic approach – lavender collars – (sold at Petsmart – maybe also on line?) Or you can go to a health foods store or anywhere that sells lavendar oil and put it on their cloth or…[Read more]
